Dark, evocative beats engulfed by the boldest raw vocals: this is TOTEK, the genre-defying electronic project of Allysha Joy and Max Dowling. In their own right, Allysha and Max both lay claim to an extensive musical prowess: the former as a member of the internationally-acclaimed nu-soul outfit 30/70, whose stylistic fluidity and exceptional musicianship has gained the band a following in their hometown and across the world. Max’s musical CV is no less significant: as a member of Client Liaison, No Zu and his own project Yelderbert - international tours, festival headlines and ARIA nominations are all part of the package. Totek is a powerful vision all unto itself, woven out of a masterful coming-together of influences: a blend of multiple electronic idioms with a unique soul sensibility; channelled through these two creatively potent individuals. Both artists well versed in production, synthesis and poetry, they push the envelope hard; together conjuring shades of Flying Lotus, Sampha, Little Dragon and Dorian Concept. It’s a unique journey that found these two artists here, together laying ground to the collaborative project, TOTEK. Meeting in a moment both seeking a sharp blast of experimental diversion and an instantaneous connection was made between Allysha and Max. Desirous to reach to the very edges of their musical potential, their collaboration led to ‘one-takes’ and unhinged experimentation; striking a light to the alternative electronic duo that is, TOTEK.
