Biography & Metadata
Rikki Jai, born Samraj Jaimungal in Friendship Village, San Fernando, Victoria County, Trinidad and Tobago, is a cultural icon and musical ambassador. Also known as “The Jaimaster,” he is one of the most influential and enduring entertainers in T&T and a pioneer of Chutney-Soca. He first rose to prominence with his 1988 debut “Sumintra,” followed by 90s hits “Pumpin,” “Show Me Your Motion,” “Wine On Ah Bumsee,” and “Dulahin.” He later helped shape Chutney-Soca with hits like “Mor Tor,” a defining crossover anthem, “Barman,” “Scorpion Sting Me,” and his 2011 inaugural TT$2M win for “White Oak & Water,” plus the Carnival Soca favorite “Leh We Fete.” Rikki Jai has competed in T&T’s premier Carnival competitions, including the Young Kings, Soca Monarch, and Calypso Monarch, winning a shared Young King title and becoming the record-breaking nine-time Chutney Soca Monarch champion of all time. He made history as the first Indo-Trinidadian to reach the Dimanche Gras Calypso Monarch finals with “Identity.” In 2012, he won the 50th Anniversary Independence Chutney Soca Monarch with “Mother Trinbago.” He holds the 2012 Hummingbird Medal (Gold), a 2023 honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from UTT, and the 2024 Sundar Popo Sunshine Award for his contribution to the performing arts. For over three decades, he has moved between Calypso, Chutney, Soca, and Indian Soca, winning awards, competitions, encores, and the admiration of audiences across the Caribbean and international diaspora.
