Biography & Metadata
Stud was a British-Irish progressive rock band formed in 1970 by former members of Taste and Family. The group consisted of bassist Richard McCracken, drummer John Wilson—both ex-Taste members—and guitarist Jim Cregan, formerly of Family. Their sound combined elements of rock, jazz, and blues, reflecting the diverse musical backgrounds of its members. In 1971, Stud released their self-titled debut album on the Deram label. The album showcased an experimental approach, blending intricate instrumentals with melodic passages. While it received some positive critical attention, it did not achieve significant commercial success. The band's fluid and improvisational style set them apart, but they struggled to find a consistent audience. Despite the lack of mainstream recognition, Stud continued to release albums, including September (1972) and Goodbye, Live at Command (1973). They remained active in the early ‘70s but eventually disbanded. Although their tenure was brief, Stud left a legacy as an intriguing, jazz-inflected progressive rock group that appealed to a niche audience of rock enthusiasts. I verify.
