Magnús Rannver Rafnsson

As a musician and engineer, Magnus Rannver Rafnsson is driven by creative forces. His music may be described as a Nordic mixture of elements from jazz, rock and tradition, including ample space of free improvisations. Rafnsson has collaborated with many of the finest jazz musicians in Iceland, a.o. guitarist Hilmar Jensson, drummer Einar Scheving and trumpeter Ari Bragi Kárason. Transposing ideas, forms and processes from one discipline to another, is a strong motivator in Rafnsson´s artistic approach. Although currently new on Spotify, Rafnsson is not new to the music. He started classical music education in young age and developed rapidly into playing classical reportoire such as J. S. Bach´s preludes, F. Schubert´s impromptus and F. Chopin´s polonaises. He gained significant recognition in his local community as a young man at the time, and at 18 he accepted a position as a piano teacher at the local music school. At the same time he attended high school with music, math and sciences as main objects of study. Rafnsson went on to Germany to study at Universität Stuttgart, to become a licensed structural engineer specializing in architectural engineering. The music always companied him, Rafnsson developed into playing free improvised music and completed studies on the jazz piano at FIH, the oldest and most respected jazz academy in Iceland. Rafnsson seeks to explore and find new musical adventures in his artistic approach.
