Biography & Metadata

Pianist and composer Tomas Grut was born and raised in a musical family in Östersund, northern Sweden. He began playing the piano at the age of ten and soon discovered a passion for creating his own music. He has since studied under award-winning Swedish pianist Lena Johnson and British composer Peter Lyne, among others, and has released five studio albums since his debut Emotions: 10 Pieces for Piano in 2011. Grut’s music is primarily piano-based, occasionally expanded with strings, blending elements of minimalism and contemporary classical music with a cinematic sensibility. Melodic and often introspective, his music spans a wide range of emotions, at times evoking the atmosphere of film and even video game soundtracks. His music has drawn comparisons to artists such as Ludovico Einaudi and Yann Tiersen. From album reviews: “Melancholic music, with a sense of heaviness at its heart, amid a kind of illuminating light.” — Lena Byström, LT “Anxious, richly illustrated and emotionally strong.” — Lo Rindberg, LT From concert reviews: “…expressed with spark and passion…” “…dreamy and saturated with beauty…” “…like a modern raindrop prelude…” — Bernt Carlsson, ÖP “…strong and melancholic…” “…warmly and sincerely played…” — Jenny Isaksson, ÖP “…mysterious, dreamy and soothing as a crystal-clear waterfall…” — Linda Peterson, LT
