Biography & Metadata

Die Piesangskille is an Afrikaans music duo made up of Daniël Francois Marais and Johan Balt, two friends who met in Potchefstroom while studying and turned a shared love for music into one of the freshest young sounds in Afrikaans pop. Their name may not take itself too seriously, and neither do they — but the songs have clearly landed. Blending acoustic pop, alternative Afrikaans, student-life nostalgia and tongue-in-cheek storytelling, Die Piesangskille first caught attention with songs like “Mal Maandagaande” and “Lyntjie,” before breaking through with their Platinum-certified hit “Inge 2.” Their debut album Almal Gly introduced a sound built on catchy melodies, honest heartbreak, humour and the kind of lyrics that feel like they were written somewhere between a koshuis room, a road trip and a late-night voice note. The duo continued building their world with releases including “Diepseeduiker 17,” “Haar Naam Was Somer,” “Converse,” “Blokfluit,” “Mia,” and the 2024 album Die Ontdekking.
