Biography & Metadata

" An alt-country craftsman." The Philadelphia Inquirer "This guy believes in song." Paul Ford, the Dallas Morning News Greg Koons grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and quit high school before moving to Hollywood in his teens, working as a housekeeper at the Chateau Marmont. Cleaning hotel suites for celebrity guests, he spent his evenings at the lobby piano playing music and absorbing the hotel’s parade of artists and characters. Those years — along with his time working menial jobs and living on the margins — shaped the hardscrabble figures who populate his songs. After returning home to Pennsylvania, Koons wrote much of Welcome to the Nowhere Motel in a storage unit he converted into a rehearsal space. The album was recorded at Fireproof Studios in Los Angeles with producer Matt Keating and engineer Adam Lasus, featuring Jason Mercer (Ani DiFranco), Jordan Richardson (Ben Harper and the Relentless Seven), Kirk Swan (Dumptruck), Matt Keating, and the late Duane Jarvis (Lucinda Williams, the Divinyls). Over his two decades in the music industry, Koons toured extensively across North America, performing in hundreds of venues from CBGB’s Gallery in New York and the Basement in Nashville, along with countless clubs throughout the United States and Canada. He earned official showcasing slots at SXSW, AmericanaFest, and the 30A Songwriters Festival.
