THE ELEM

THE ELEM is a transatlantic alternative rock project founded in Portugal in 2025 by songwriter and producer M.L. Leichter. Built around a rotating collective of international musicians, the project blends alternative rock, indie and shoegaze influences with cinematic arrangements, layered instrumentation and emotionally driven storytelling. Exploring themes of grief, faith, paranoia, unfulfilled love and the mysteries of the human condition, THE ELEM's debut EP, Perhaps, It’s Me, features mixing by acclaimed engineer Mike Fraser, mastering by Billy Joe Bowers and artwork by celebrated visual artist James Marsh. Inspired by what he calls “The Unknown”, Leichter's creative process begins with melodies and lyrics that arrive instinctively, followed by an intensive process of production and arrangement. Unafraid to experiment, he blends multiple vocal performances, intricate percussion and evolving song structures, sometimes combining up to 70 vocal tracks to capture the right emotion. The culmination of a creative journey spanning more than two decades, ‘Perhaps, It’s Me’ is an ambitious, deeply human project that embraces mystery, intensity and the unanswered questions of life.
