Skinny Hightower is a jazz pianist, drummer, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose music blends the spirit of 1970s funk, soul, and jazz fusion with a modern sensibility. Drawing inspiration from artists like Stevie Wonder , Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock , Billy Cobham, George Duke, and George Benson, his sound is rooted in groove, rich harmony, and a deep respect for musical storytelling. As a musician, Hightower’s influence by his musical heroes is evident. At the keyboard, Hightower’s playing reflects the expressive vocabulary of pioneers like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joe Sample, and George Duke—combining rich harmony with melodic clarity and a distinct rhythmic touch that draws from Michel Petrucciani. His drum approach is deeply informed by the architecture of players such as Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, and Tony Williams, where pocket, dynamics, flare, and phrasing shape the emotional arc of the music. As a bassist and arranger, he carries the melodic sensibility of Anthony Jackson and the structural awareness that has defined great rhythm sections. Equally at home behind the console, Hightower approaches production as part of the composition itself. Inspired by the sonic craftsmanship of Stevie Wonder classic period (1972-1976) and the meticulous musical worlds created by Steely Dan, he focuses on tone, balance, and intentional space—allowing each instrument to serve the larger narrative of the piece. Overall, Hightower aims to make music that lasts.
