Oded Tzur

Described by The Guardian as a “unique tenor sax whisper”, Oded Tzur’s sound is one of the most unexpected phenomena in the world of instrumental music. While the roots of his craft lie deep in the ancient tradition of Indian classical music, its canopy is the ever-evolving narrative-like suite about his wife, Isabela. This music is more than a conversation, states the New York City Jazz Record: “It is an interactive prayer.” But what makes it larger than the sum of its parts is the portraiture aspect of Ragas themselves, which Tzur has distilled into a universal art form. Each composition is set to a matrix of intricate relationships — gravity points and microtonalities — which then give rise to the hallmark of the process: a personality. When Indian musicians speak about a Raga, they describe it as a god or a goddess, an abstract presence with which the artist connects in the moment of playing. This form of worship through description is the aesthetic language Tzur has made his own, by weaving it into a modern storytelling style of composition. Its paintbrushes are bold orchestrations and intoxicating rhythms. Its heirlooms are the reverence of a praying monk and the ecstasy of a dance party at 2 AM. In 2025, Tzur founded his own record label: Sky River Music, dedicated entirely to the art of ritual and reimagining music as its focal point.
