Biography & Metadata
Shimon Hoshino is a Japanese contemporary artist and surfer who lives in daily dialogue with the ocean. Rooted in the deep concentration and physical awareness cultivated through surfing, his practice transforms irregular wave energy, breath, stillness, and shifting currents into minimal monochrome artworks, spatial sound, and fragrance notes that complete the perception of colour. Visual information is intentionally reduced to black and white; depth is shaped through sound, while color is completed through scent. After leaving Japan at the age of 12 to study in France and later spending his formative years in the United States, Hoshino returned and began his multidisciplinary practice in 2016, spanning sound design, spatial composition, and visual art. His works have surpassed 20 million cumulative Spotify streams, and he received the Grand Prix at Fender’s global competition Player Plus Studio Sessions. In 2026, he released A Wordless Letter featuring pianist Noriko Kose. The work emerged as an award-winning piece from a sampling competition co-hosted by tribe—the label founded by Nujabes—alongside Hypebeast and SURF Music, and stands as one of his defining works shaped by the sensation of hearing through breath. Today, his practice expands from art into architectural spaces, hotels, museums, and immersive installations. Each work preserves an unreproducible moment of concentration—a singular trace of perception that can exist only once. office@shimonhoshino.com
