Biography & Metadata

Laboratorium Pieśni (Song Laboratory) makes music that feels ancient and completely alive. Coming from northern Poland, the female vocal ensemble brings traditional polyphonic songs into a world of raw voices, hypnotic rhythms and instinctive improvisation. Their music draws from traditions across Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Georgia, Scandinavia and beyond: songs passed between generations, places and languages, constantly finding new forms. Voices are at the centre of everything. They can be intimate and meditative, powerful and untamed, moving from close polyphonic harmonies into wild vocal textures. Drums, shruti box, flutes, kalimba, singing bowls and other acoustic instruments expand this sound into something that moves between folk, ritual, world music and the experimental. For Laboratorium Pieśni, tradition is not a museum piece. Songs are discovered through travels, encounters and workshops, then explored collectively, sometimes kept close to their source, sometimes transformed through new arrangements and improvisation. What remains is their emotional core. Since forming in 2013, Laboratorium Pieśni has taken this approach around the world, performing and leading workshops in more than 20 countries. Their rendition of the Belarusian traditional song “Sztoj pa moru” has reached over 17 million views and introduced listeners worldwide to the group’s distinctive vocal sound.
