Biography & Metadata

With 30 years of career, 19 released albums and countless concerts all over the world, Cristina Branco is an tireless ambassador for Portuguese culture and language. She began her career with Cristina Branco in Holland (1997), which became a success in that country. In the following years, Cristina’s name exploded, with sold-out dates in countless cities. Her following works, Murmúrios (1998) and Post-Scriptum (2000) reinforced this momentum. It was only at the turn of the millennium, with albums like Sensus (2003), that Cristina Branco began to be discovered by the Portuguese public. Comparisons with Amália Rodrigues were inevitable. These were followed by Abril (2007), with cover versions of songs by José Afonso, and the iconic Fado Tango (International Version) (2011), which features collaborations with renowned portuguese authors. Considered Best Album of the Year by the Portuguese Author Society, Menina (2016) is part of a trilogy that includes Branco (2018) and Eva (2020). In 2022 – celebrating her 25th career anniversary – she released ‘Amoras numa Tarde de Outono’, with pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva. Release in 2023, 'Mãe' is a unique musical creation, that offers an original repertoire that takes us on an engaging journey of rediscovering fado. ´Mulheres de Abril’ (2025) is the new album, a tribute to José Afonso, this time on a feminine perspetive. This record won the José Afonso Award 2026 and the PLAY Award for Best Traditional Music Album.
